This ambitious project is the brainchild of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) which has finally taken off with Khan Market being the pilot location. The facility is easily accessible. You simply have to fill in your basic details on the form provided including mobile number and e-mail id. Once that is done, you will receive a One Time Password which you can then use to connect to the free Wi-Fi on your device.
Service providers Tata Docomo and Vodafone have partnered with NDMC to provide this facility to the masses. The project was supposed to be launched in July, but got delayed due to various technical and logistical issues.
The next stop for the project is Connaught Place. Although Khan Market has taken off to a great start, Connaught Place seems to be facing some problems which has led to a delay in the implementation of services there.
“CP being a large area, we cannot connect the service from pole to pole, as we have done in Khan Market. Also, we decided to shift the cables and transmission wires inside the 1.2 km long utility tunnel in CP, so that the market doesn’t look ugly.” OP Mishra, NDMC
There have also been instances of security agencies in and around Connaught Place who have raised concerns about the transmission lines interfering with their networks. All things considered, it is likely that the service will start by the end of this month. The project is already running on trial in N-block.
