Haven’t you often watched a dance sequence in a movie shot at some spectacular waterfalls and wondered where in heaven you can find them? The good news is that India is blessed with several waterfalls that will take your breath away. Here is our pick for the top 5 places to visit in India, where you will find some of these gorgeous waterfalls.
Athirapally Falls, Kerala
If you thought Kerala was all about beaches and backwaters, you should check out the Athirapally Falls in Trissur district. Often called the ‘Niagara of India’, while it is far from being the highest waterfall, Athirapally roars with life during the monsoon season. It is located on the Chalakudy River near the Vazhachal Forest. The backdrop of the Western Ghats, the rare Great Hornbill, and dense plantations of teak, bamboo and eucalyptus make for a visual treat. Kerala is among the best places to visit in India, and when you’re planning your trip make sure you have Athirapally on your list.
Nohkalikai Falls, Meghalaya
We’ve all heard of Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. Located very close to Cherrapunji is the Nohkalikai waterfalls, the highest plunge waterfall in the country. The name “Nohkalikai” comes from a Khasi legend about local women who, after a terrible tragedy jumped off the cliff next to the waterfalls. With its beautiful Khasi hills, living bridges, and exotic flora and fauna Meghalaya, part of the ‘Seven Sisters’, is one of the most picture-perfect places to see in India.
Jog Falls, Karnataka
A tourist magnet and a tad crowded most of the time, but the Jog Falls in Shimoga, Karnataka is a must-see when you’re in that part of the country. Born of the Sharavathi River, it consists of four distinct falls, Raja, Rani, Rocket and Roarer. Visit just after the monsoons and you’ll know exactly why they’re called these names!
Dudhsagar Falls, Goa
We all swear by Goa’s beaches, and Goa’s parties. What we often tend to forget is that the Western Ghats in the state make for some of the most beautiful spots in the country. The Dudhsagar, literally translated to “Sea of Milk” is located in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary at Collem, Goa. If you’re travelling the Goa-Karnataka circuit by train, you can catch a glimpse of the Dudhsagar Falls in all its glory.
Courtallam Falls, Tamilnadu
Want a head massage that you will remember for the rest of your life? Head to the Spa of South India – Courtallam. The nine waterfalls are believed to have healing properties owing to the forest herbs that they flow over on their way. The Peraruvi is the largest of the nine, and its fall is interrupted by a 19 m deep crater, due to which it comes down with reduced impact.
