Dating to the mid 19th century, Maharaja Ganga Mahal has served as the residence of the British political agent in the court of the erstwhile state of Bikaner. The warm, welcoming building, which reflects the colonial style of architecture, has been carefully restored and equipped with all latest amenities while the antique chandeliers and original fireplaces maintain much of the old-fashioned charm of the Raj days. With Junagarh Fort within walking distance and almost all other attractions within easy reach, the hotel is the perfect base for a sightseeing tour of Bikaner. Originally a hunting lodge that was built by HH Maharaja Sir Ganga Singh of Bikaner and which hosted distinguished guests like the Prince of Wales in 1905 and Lord Erwin in 1927, the Gajner Palace was meticulously restored and transformed into a heritage hotel in 1976. Located just off NH 15, the hotel stands on the edge of a lake, surrounded by grounds which are actually a private wildlife sanctuary, offering awe-inspiring scenery and a truly authentic royal experience to its guests. The palace is divided into four wings - Dungar Niwas, Gulab Niwas, Champa Niwas and Mandir Chowk. Dungar Niwas, the most opulent of the four sections, houses the Historic Suites, which is where the British luminaries of the past were accommodated. Gulab Niwas has the Deluxe Rooms while Champa Niwas is newest wing. Mandir Chowk forms the reception area and is dominated by magnificent banyan trees and an ancient temple. Spend a relaxing evening at the Panghat Spa, which offers Ayurvedic massage treatments in natural, tented surroundings. Nature walks, cycling and camel and jeep safaris into the adjoining sanctuary are also arranged by the hotel.
