About a seven - eight hour drive from Srinagar, Katra has been made famous because of the Vaishno Devi cave temple. Pilgrims flock in millions to this holy temple town of the Goddess Vaishnodevi. Believed to be built by the Pandavas, this shrine is one among the oldest of the all the shrines in India and situated at an altitude of 5200 feet. The temple depicts almost all the deities of the Hindu Pantheon. High amidst the snow clad mountain peaks, the shrine has a commanding view of the magnificent Himalayas.

There is not much to see here besides the Vaishno Devi temple. Head for nearby Jammu, Udhampur once you have offered your prayers at the temple.

There are a number of eateries in the town and along the route to the shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi shrine. Rajma rice is the most popular and common dish in these parts. The eateries also provide sweets, puri-bhaji and Chole-Bature

Katra, like Jammu, is hot during summers and cold during winters. The months from April to July can be really hot.

When To visit

The best time to visit Katra would be in Feb - March and September - November.
