See places where history exists not just in books but is much alive in the forts that stand proudly and caves that hide evidences of an olden people. Listen to the guide as he recounts the tales of the past, some true, others just tales tall. There's also much for the culture freaks, be it a village designed to bring together arts from around the country, a town that zealously preserves its weaving and tiny hamlet in the hills dedicated solely to the craft of pottery.

The caves at Bhimbetka, which first sheltered and then became a vast canvas for the early man, where he etched all that he saw, wondered at and feared, are an exhibit for early human life like no other. The landscape - rocky outcrops surrounded by evergreen forests - itself appears primeval. And as you wander around and notice the paintings, they too seem to speak of a time long past - a scene which could depict a dance or a ritual and a hunt in progress with stick-men astride horses, carrying spears.

They say that the town is haunted. And an ASI signboard prohibiting visitors to enter the borders of Bhangarh after sunset only adds to the effect. Legends abound as to how this hamlet, located some 270 kilometres from Delhi, came to be haunted and you'll hear spooky stories of strange noises in the night. But visit it during the day and what you'll experience is the serenity of the ruins and a sense of all that the place has seen.

A must-see is the Bara Imambara, a tomb that is held-up, mind-bogglingly, without any pillars or beams. Other sights include the Chota Imambara, the British Residency, Rumi Darwaza and the famous market at Hazratganj.
