An introduction to Amritsar is best served through its importance within the framework of India’s history and culture. The State of Punjab is known for its confident, life loving, loud laughing, almost entirely hedonistic native, the Punjabi. It is also home to the largest number of Sikhs in the country. Sikhs are the followers of Guru Nanak and the ten Sikh Gurus who followed suit, the last of which is the holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib. Sikhism is the fifth largest organized religion in the world. The Guru Granth Sahib, or Adi Granth as it is also known, is the final and eternal Guru of the Sikhs. It was first installed in the Golden Temple at Amritsar. The weight of importance that rests upon this city’s shoulders can now be fully understood as it is here where the holiest book of the followers of the world’s fifth largest organized religion, was first placed. The city itself derives its name from the water surrounding the Golden Temple. That apart, Amritsar is also a history fiend’s gem studded find. Amritsar is in Northern India, in the State of Punjab. It is 217 kilometres northwest of the State capital, Chandigarh and 32 kilometres east of Lahore, Pakistan. This places it in the near vicinity of the north-western border between India and Pakistan.
