Named after the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, Aurangabad in Maharashtra is often known as the City of Gates. There are majestic monuments of historical importance scattered all over the city. Surrounded by hills on all sides, the city falls along the famous Silk Route and has a rich culture that goes back many, many centuries. Aurangabad has one of the richest architectural heritages in all of India and the Ajanta and Ellora caves here are famous all over the world for their sculptures and paintings. Bibi ka Maqbara in Aurangabad is a replica of Agra’s Taj Mahal and is a fine example of the beauty and intricacies of Persian art. The city is famous for its woven Himroo shawls, fantastic Paithani sarees and semi precious stones jewellery. Bidri, a metal object decorated with Indian art and made of iron, copper and other metals, is a unique product found only here and nowhere else in the world.
Marathi and Urdu are the principle languages spoken in Aurangabad.
