Austria Overview

With its wine pubs, mountaineering, hotspot Cathedral and romantic Waltzes, there’s something for every tourist in Austria, even those not familiar with the blue Danube. The Eastern Empire, once one of the most important centers of power for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is increasingly popular with tourists for the winter games it shares space with Switzerland for as well as for summer romances and treks along the Alps. After its defeat in WW I and its geographical split, it’s smaller and less powerful, but despite its Nazi past, it’s popular now for its rich culture and plethora of classical music greats. The federation is different from Europe so don’t skip a visit, as reserved as its residents may be. And no, they’re not the same as Germans – a mistake people make before their first visit. Be prepared to eat, drink and make merry when you’re there, there’s a lot to see and do apart from the Alps that dominate Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg. But you will see rolling hills, streaming rivers, meadows and fields that will make you gasp – so get prepared for a lot of natural beauty when you visit, which is why a train journey is also recommended. And of course, a characteristic Austrian destination and one that doesn’t go unmentioned when the word Austria pops up – you have to make sure you visit the ever-famous Vienna. With its coffee houses, Sacher Torte, steps of St. Stephen’s cathedral and majestic architecture, it’s almost a definition of Austria in itself.
