Where do we start? It might sound cheesy (pun intended) but getting into a relationship with your pizza is not only possible but quite likely in Italy and Florence is no exception. The inventors of the gelato and the bruschetta can do you quite well in other delicacies as well including the bistecca alla Florentina (beefsteak), the local pecorino cheese and cantuccini di prato (a dessert of almond cookies). Apart from the trattorias, Florence also abounds in the enotecas or the wine bars. Check them out to sample Italy’s best wines – don’t worry, there are complementary side dishes available.
With a menu comprising mostly of mixed meats, this one is not for those looking for Italian veggie. Rabbit is highly recommended and goes particularly well with the house wine. With cantuccini for dessert, it’s a meal fit for the gods.
Wildly popular with the locals and extremely easy on the wallet. Sounds just your thing? Come here then to sample hearty Italian fare amidst throngs of hungry Florentines. Bistecca (beefsteak) and tripe are specialities.
In a city renowned for gelatos, Vivoli’s gelateria stands tall. Not one for the penny pinchers, it offers flavours such as green apple, chocolate and orange and banana chocolate hazelnut in cones or cups. Though some grouse that Vivoli’s become a tourist trap, most visitors who’ve sampled the delights of pera con caramello (pear and caramel) become slaves for life.
Prepare to splurge here. With awards such as a Michelin three-star, the Restaurant Magazine's Editor's Choice for Best Restaurant in the World in 2005 under its belt and included in the top 50 best restaurants, overall, you can hardly expect a cheap meal. You won’t get traditional Italian here – the emphasis is on twists on classics (think white Alba truffles in fondue) for the discerning Conde Nast set and teary eyes are the norm here – both at the food and at the bill.
