Hampi Overview

Hampi in north Karnataka is located within the ruins of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the king Krishnadevaraya. Predating the city of Vijayanagara, it continues to be an important religious centre, housing the Virupaksha Temple, as well as several other monuments belonging to the old city. With its majestic boulders and gritty landscape, it’s a great place to spend a few days wandering around and discovering the rich, vibrant history of India while also getting the quietude that one wants when on a vacation. Within this arid landscape lies a little oasis with lush palm, banana, and mango trees nestled near the river. Travelers frequent this place because not only is it a treat to the eyes but also a stark contrast to what most other travel destinations offer. It is an ideal spot for people who are interested in history and/or nature.

Local Language

The languages that are widely spoken and accepted in Hampi are Kannada (the state language of Karnataka) and Hindi. Telugu can also be found in this part of Karnataka. Thanks to the booming foreign tourism, English also has picked up very fast and most of the population (including temple priests) speak English.
