The most convenient and economical way to reach Greece is by air. Greece has sixteen international airports, but only those in Athens, Thessaloniki, Rhodesand Iraklio (Crete) take scheduled flights. For travelling between the islands, flights go between Lesvos, Limnos, Samos Chios.
If you want to use the waterways to get into the country, there are plenty of options you can look up. The most popular routes into Greece are from Italy and Turkey. There are ferries going between Greece and the Italian ports of Ancona, Bari, Brindisi and Venice. Similarly, there are regular ferry services between Turkey’s Aegean coast and the Greek islands. But these can get very crowded in summer and it’s recommended to make a reservation in advance. There are also inter-island ferries that you can hop on to, for example, the Dodecanese and Mykonos are two popular destinations.
The Greek Railways Organization operates a number of daily buses between different locations in Greece. There are also private bus services taking you places.
There are plenty of trains available every day for different routes within and outside of Greece. For instance, you can take a train to Budapest and Bucharest. But there are no direct trains between Athens and Istanbul. Travelers have to first take a train to Thessaloniki and connect with a daily service running to the Turkish city.
