There are several options for flying to NZ but your cheapest way into the country might be through Australia. Seven airports in New Zealand handle international flights, with Auckland receiving maximum traffic. It also has a wide network of flights for traveling to different destinations within the country.
The scenic train rides make for memorable journeys. Tranz Scenic operates many stunning routes: the Overlander between Auckland and Wellington, the Tranz-Coastal between Christchurch and Picton, and the Tranz-Alpine, which snakes over the Southern Alps between Christchurch and Greymouth. It also operates the weekday Capital Connection commuter service between Palmerston North and Wellington. Reservations can be made through Tranz Scenic directly, or at most train stations, or through travel agents and visitor information centres, where you can also pick up timetables booklets.
While bus travel in NZ is quite well organized, with services transporting you to the far reaches of both islands, it can end up being a bit expensive and time-consuming. The main bus company is InterCity, which also has an extra-comfort travel and sightseeing arm called Newmans Coach Lines. Larger cities have extensive bus networks but they mostly function during the day, also on weekends, particularly on Sundays, bus services can be hard to find. Wellington is perhaps the only city with a great train service with five suburban routes. The most convenient way to get around tedious public transport schedules and explore NZ at your own pace would be in your own vehicle. You will easily find good value car- and campervan-hire options. It is also common for tourists to buy their own set of wheels and sell them off before returning.
If you thought you are going to wade your way around this island, think again. There’s virtually no long-distance water transport around NZ. Obvious exceptions include the boat services between Auckland and other islands in the Hauraki Gulf, the inter-island ferries that go across Cook Strait between Wellington and Picton, and the passenger ferry that negotiates the width of Foveaux Strait between Bluff and the town of Oban on Stewart Island.
Riding across NZ’s clean and green roads is a popular transport option. The roads are usually in good condition and the climate clement. Bikes and cycling gear are readily available (for renting and buying) in the main centers, as are bicycle repair shops. If you decide to cycle your way around, keep in mind an increasingly popular expedition – which is to follow an upgraded path along an old railway line into the former gold-mining heartland of Otago.
