It is commonplace to ascribe words like ‘unique’, ‘different’ to an entity when you are dedicating testimonials to it. However, in Macau’s case there is good reason. It is a city that has multiple faces. Over the past decade, this once-upon-a-time sleepy burrow has transformed itself in such a tremendous way that it is now abuzz with life and vigour. But unlike other booming cities such as Shanghai whose development was marked by imposing skyscrapers and large offices, the characters of Macau’s story are predominantly a fleet of world class casinos that have sprung up in many of its posh backyards. It is a roaring trade and it is not surprising that Macau is now popularly known as the ‘Las Vegas of the East.’ However, in sharp contrast to that image, walk around this city and you might just wonder if you have stepped out of China and entered a town in the Mediterranean. It does have a logic; the Portugese were Macau’s first colonial masters – and the evidence lies everywhere, in the stone fortresses, the baroque churches, the cobbled streets, the gardens etc. Macau really is where East meets West - a fusion of the Oriental and the Mediterranean architecture, modern blending with traditional, the meeting point of two great cultures. Macau became a part of China in 1999, a couple of years after the British withdrew from Hong Kong. Now, tourists come here for different things – some for the gambling, some for the shopping, or to just enjoy the beaches at Coloane. After all, Macau has something for everybody.
The official currency of Macao is Macanese Pataca (MOP$)
Chinese and Portugese are the official languages. Cantonese too is widely spoken.
