Situated in the western part of India and close to the Arabian Sea, Maharashtra is among one of the few Indian states that throws up a great deal of diversity when it comes to for tourism. With good beaches, splendid hill stations and happening metropolitan cities, travellers can choose to do a lot of different things on their vacation here. The richest state and the financial capital of the country, Maharashtra is divided into five major regions, among which the Konkan region is perhaps the most exotic and home to all the famous tourist spots. Mumbai or ‘the city of dreams’, which is also fondly called the New York of India, is usually the first stop for visitors flying into the state. The Gateway of India along with the lively beaches of Juhu, Chowpati, Aska and Marve are a must-see when in Mumbai. The ancient Elephanta Caves are only a ferry ride away from the bustling city. But you surely cannot forget the Mahalakhsmi Temple, the Siddhivinayaka Temple and Mount Mary Church which attract the religious minded in droves. A visit to the very famous Marine Drive and shopping at Fashion Street will nicely round up your trip to Mumbai. Pune is the second largest city of Maharashtra with Shaniwarwada, Aga Khan Palace, Saras Baug, Khadakwasla Dam, Parvati Temple and Sinhgad being the most visited tourist spots. Hill stations such as Lonavala, Khandala, Mahabaleshwar and Matheran are, however, important for very different reasons. These towns were established in the cool heights of the Sahayadri hills during the British rule in India, and ever since then, they have been much sought after summer getaways.
