Surrounded by fruit orchards and thick coniferous forest, Mukteshwar, is a calm and secluded town in the Nainital District of Uttarakhand, India. It’s name stems from Lord Shiva, who offered Moksha (salvation) to a demon here by slaying him, and hence the Mukteshwar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is a famous attraction here. This city is situated at a height of about 7500 feet in the Kumaon Hills and provides a majestic view of the Himalayas, including many famous peaks like the Nanda Devi. One can also see Almora town below, especially on moonlit nights. Apart from the Multeshwar temple, other famous attractions here include The Indian Veterinary Research Institute and Chauthi Jaali, which is suitable for rock climbing and rappelling.
Hindi and Kumaoni are the languages commonly spoken here. Because of the surge in tourism in the recent years, a small fraction of the population also speaks English.
