There are various ways to enjoy our very own Venice - soak in the sun from wave-kissed beaches, walk down the jetty at sunset nibbling your favourite ice-cream, spend the night on the waters in a traditional houseboat and tuck into some mean meen (fish) curries prepared in typical Kerala style. Every traveller has his own way of relishing the many charms of the backwaters, and like every person who leaves his footprint on the sands of Alleppey, you too can craft an enchanting itinerary to enjoy the town to the hilt. We bring you some options.
If history fascinates you, then this 18th century palace with its narrow corridors, dormer windows and gabled roofs will appeal to your senses. The palace houses a museum with paintings and ancient sculptures, and the famous Gajendra Moksham mural, which at 14 feet x 11 feet is the largest mural in the entire region.
Enjoy picnics? Then pack a sumptuous hamper and head out to the Alleppey Beach for some fun in the sun. There's an old lighthouse and a park with boating facilities that you may want to check out while there. (The park is open from 4 to 7 pm.)
The island of Pathiramanal (the word means Sand of Midnight), attracts several species of migratory birds. Surrounded by the Vembanad Lake and the Kayamkulam Lake, the beautiful island can be accessed only by boat, and is an ideal place for a leisurely backwater cruise.
This probably is one of the most-visited places in Alleppey. Punnamada Kayal is known for the annual Nehru Boat Festival that happens sometime during the months of August/September.
This is the rice bowl of Kerala in every sense. With emerald paddy fields, plantations of bananas, cassava and yams, sparkling waterways and scenic views of the countryside, Kuttanad is one place you must visit.
There are several beautiful temples to tour through in the Venice of the East. There's the famous Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple, which is known to make miracles happen. The Kettukazhcha festival hosted here annually is attended by throngs of devotees, who walk in processions carrying effigies of bullocks and horses. You may also want to visit the Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple to see the paintings of the Dasavatharam (ten avatars of Lord Vishnu) and sample the delicious palpayasam that's served to the residing deity. The Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple is well-known for the 30,000 images of snake-deities. Also, this is the only temple where a Brahmin priestess performs the religious rites.
Do visit Arthunkal, an important Christian pilgrimage centre at the St. Sebastian Church, where the Arthunkal Perunnal Festival is celebrated annually. Another very ancient church that you must visit is the St. Mary's Church, which is believed to have been established by St. Thomas. The Edathua Church, which is 24 kilometres from Alleppey, is dedicated to St. George and supposed to have miraculous powers to heal mental disorders and other health problems.
