Itanagar is the beautiful capital city of Arunachal Pradesh and situated in the foothills. A deeply Buddhist culture prevails here, and the Buddhist temple, a beautiful yellow roofed shrine, reflects the extensive Tibetan influence in the region. The grounds of the temple offer a good view of Itanagar Town. The Ganga Lake or Gyaker Sinyi is a lovely picnic spot in a dense jungle of bamboo groves and orchid trees. Climb atop the hill for a spectacular view of the jungle and a serene green forest lake. It is a popular spot for outings, boating and picnics. The Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum provides a good indication of the culture and lifestyle of the people of the state, and houses wood carvings, musical instruments, textiles, handicrafts and archaeological finds. The lifestyles of all the major tribes have been depicted, and the display covers a wide range of subjects such as the people, house types, festivals, dances, handicrafts, textile designs, musical instruments, weapons of war and chase. The Polo Park is a little botanical garden atop a ridge overlooking the town, and houses a small zoo.
Bomdila is a quaint, picturesque town, renowned for its Buddhist monasteries and apple orchards. It has magnificent views of the Kameng Valley and of clouds gathering at the top of the Nechipu Pass. Snow-capped Himalayan peaks provide a scenic backdrop to this little town. The Orchid Research and Development Station at Tippi is on the banks of river Bharali and covers a vast area of 112 acres. It showcases 425 species of orchids, some of which are endangered. Two other Orchid conservation sanctuaries located at Sessa and Dirang are worth visiting as well. The Buddhist monastery is a beautiful structure with a tourist lodge, a craft centre displaying local crafts and a shopping centre. Visit the Lower, Middle and Upper Gompas in Bomdila. The Middle Gompa houses the Blue Medicine Buddha, on which healers focus their prayers as well as meditations. The Upper Gompa is located on a steep hill and houses a school for monk children, a prayer hall and a temple of Lord Buddha. Take a walk down the beautiful apple orchards and visit the Bomdila View Point as well.
One of the most beautiful places in Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang is a holy land of Buddhist monasteries. The Dalai Lama often preaches here. Tawang is also a trekker’s paradise, with many trails of different difficulty levels originating here, and the sparkling Tawang Chu River flowing through the city. The Tawang Monastery is the celebrated birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama. It is also known as the Golden Namgyal Lhatse and is one of the oldest monasteries in the world. Standing tall at a height of 3,000 metres, this three storey building houses a temple and a glided statue of Lord Buddha. The Regyaling Gompa is surrounded by a lush green pine grove and is a beautiful sight. The Urgelling Gompa is another popular sight to visit here in Tawang. Pangang Teng Tso Lake is a beautiful spot popular in Arunachal Pradesh for summer picnics. There are many scenic lakes and waterfalls in this region. Numerous other Gompas are found in the region of Tawang as well. The Sela Pass, at a height of 4,215 meters, is the second highest pass in the world, and is located here.
An ancient town in the plains of Arunachal, Pasighat is a picture-postcard of a town with the mighty Brahmaputra River flowing through it. The Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary is located here, and is a must-visit for nature lovers. This is also the meeting point of Dihang and Lohit Rivers with the Brahmaputra. The Kekar Monying is a mountain cliff where the Adi tribe put up resistance against the British in 1911.
This is a temple site, now in ruins, situated at the foot of the Siang hills. Ruins of temples and valuable scriptures were unearthed at this site during excavations. A large number of pilgrims are drawn to this holy site, with a decorated basement of a temple, icons of deities, animal motifs and floral designs, carved columns and panels. These rich granite sculptures belong to 14th century. The most important scultures here are Lord Indra,the Airavat, Surya on the Chariot and huge Nandi bull. The temple dedicated to Goddess Durga at Malinithan is built the classical style of Orissa. Malinithan is associated with legends of Lord Krishna.The Akashi-Ganga waterfalls are where people come for a holy bath to away their sins. The Mopin Temple is another site worth visiting.
