Berlin Tour & Travel Guide - Places to See in Berlin

Brandenburg Gate and Bundestag

Berlin's only remaining city gate, built of sandstone between 1788 and 1791, stands tall and imperial, with many high columns and beams. A statue of the Goddess of Victory sits atop the gate. The gate was originally situated behind the Berlin Wall. The German Parliament building, or the Bundestag, has a spectacular glass dome which offers a great view of Berlin. This building is situated near the Brandenburg Gate.

Eastside Gallery

A long section of the Berlin Wall has been conserved and handed over to graffiti artists from the world over. An open-air art gallery of sorts, artists from over 21 countries have painted the 1316m stretch in bright shades and controversial images. Spend hours admiring the handiwork and creativity of these street artists. The stretch is known as an international freedom memorial.

Checkpoint Charlie

The historical crossing point in the wall dividing West and East Berlin during the Cold War has now been turned into a memorial and a museum. For nearly 30 years, Checkpoint Charlie in the Friedrichstrasse was the only crossing point among East and West Berlin. The soldier's post can be visited, and tourists can be photographed under the border sign.

Jewish Museum

Also known as the Jüdisches Museum, it exhibits over 2000 years of German-Jewish history. Its modern architecture and unique exhibitions bring history alive.

Hamburger Bahnhof

Located in the train station, this is one of Berlin’s best known art galleries. The historic Hamburger Bahnhof was built in 1846 and damaged in the Second World War, but has now been reconstructed. It hosts an extensive contemporary art collection filled with works by Andy Warhol, Josephy Beuys and Roy Lichtenstein, among others.

Charlottenburg Palace

An 18th-century baroque structure that was originally constructed as the summer home for Sophie Charlotte, the wife of Elector Frederick III, the first Prussian king. The Schloss Charlottenburg is the biggest palace in Berlin full of art pieces. The surrounding gardens contain a mausoleum, pavilion and the Belvedere, which houses the porcelain museum.

Berliner Dom

Built around 1895, the Berliner Dom is a majestic basilica and the most impressive church in Berlin. The crypt inside houses over 80 sarcophagi of Prussian royals, and the pulpit, the organ, and the stained glass windows are all impressive as well. Visitors can climb the dome, which is decorated with intricate mosaic, for a beautiful view over the Berlin center.

Pergamon Museum

The Antiquity Collection, the Islamic Art Museum and the Middle East Museum are the three principal departments of the Pergamon. It hosts a number of unique items, like the Pergamon Altar from the second century BC, and the Market Gate of Miletus from Roman antiquity. The Mshatta facade from a Jordanian desert palace and the Ishtar Gare are other interesting items housed here.
