There’s a whole range of places and activities in Darjeeling to choose from. From shopping to getting away to quieter locations or spending time at monasteries, doing a spot of trekking or dabbling in photography, there is a whole lot of things-to-do while you're here.
Like a lot other hill stations, the Mall is the centre of action here as well. The Mall is the main market place where you can shop for Tibetan handicrafts, antiques, hand-knitted sweaters and souvenirs. If you walk up to the Chowrasta, you can even hire a pony to trot up and down the stretch of road.
If you’re in Darjeeling, you must visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute or HMI, set up by the town’s most famous son – Tenzing Norgay, who along with Sir Edmund Hillary was amongst the first persons to scale Mt. Everest in 1953. On display is the equipment they used, as well as personal items like their boots, clothing and other essentials. If you’re a mountaineering enthusiast, then you may like to know more about the various courses offered here. You can also sign up for a rock climbing session at the Tenzing Norgay Rock
A must-see for all visitors to this city, the Ghoom Monastery, is 8 kilometres from the town and situated at an altitude of 8000 feet. It is the abode of the Maitreya Buddha (the Future Buddha) – a 15 feet tall gold-painted statue, sheathed in precious stones. There are intricate paintings on the rooftop and walls, and prayer wheels, thangkas and butter lamps seen all around the monastery.
Keep aside a day to enjoy the unique experience of travelling in the Toy Train of Darjeeling or more properly, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which is a World Heritage site. This miniature train will take you on a memorable journey through hills and slopes, by quaint villages and door fronts.
If you want to combine a splendid view of the Kanchenjunga with time well-spent at a monastery, then head to the Bhutia Basti Gompa, a kilometre outside Darjeeling. Known to have been located at the Observatory Hill years ago, this shrine built in the Tibeto-Nepalese style of architecture is a treasure trove of Buddhist artefacts and texts. The original Tibetan Book of the Dead is also part of the collection.
Founded in 1958, the zoo is an endeavour to preserve and study the wildlife of the Himalayas. It has some magnificent animals like Siberian tigers, Tibetan wolves, Himalayan black bears and shy red pandas.
And now for the meeting with the elusive Snow Leopard! This is the one and only place on the globe where beautiful and rare snow leopards are bred successfully in captivity. It is probably only here that you would get a glimpse of the snow leopard and its cubs. (Note: The place is open from 10 am to 4.30 pm.)
Standing tall at 2,590 meters, the Tiger Hill is the highest point in this area. While it shares the same name as the hill that became famous during the Kargil War, this Tiger Hill is better known for its amazing sunrises. Be here at the crack of dawn to see the sun rise above the Kanchenjunga, spilling gold over the snow-capped peaks. Be sure to capture the gold orb and the play of pink, crimson and orange on the snow, with your camera.
