Originally a backpacker's hangout, Ao Nang is slowly beginning to resemble its more famous cousin, Chiang Mai. With mushrooming spas, luxury accommodation, noisy long-tail boats and a host of dining options (think Scandinavian!), the beaches are getting commercialised rapidly. Yet for all that, Ao Nang still retains its laid back air and offers more than just a sun and sand holiday. There are serious rock-climbing and scuba-diving opportunities on offer and nearby Nopparat Thara has been declared a national park. Krabi Airport is about forty minutes away by car. Local songthaews run from Ao Nang to Krabi and from Krabi to the airport. The total trip between Ao Nang and the airport takes around two hours.
A fascinating peninsular beach, Rai Leh can only be accessed by boat. The trip is well worth it – one of the loveliest beaches in Thailand, Rai Leh also offers great rock-climbing routes. There are lots of shops that can provide equipment rental and instruction for beginners and advanced climbers alike. Even if you aren’ an avid climber, Rai Leh is worth a visit for its sheer beauty alone with its jade waters, green limestone cliffs and satin beaches. The only way to get to Rai Leh is by long-tail boat, either from Tha Kong Ka (Chao Fa) in Krabi or from the seafront at Ao Nang
A chain of six separate islands, Phi Phi boasts emerald waters, snowy sand, a natural reserve and Hollywood film locations. While most of the boat operators will push for a visit to James Bond Island, the other islands including Ko Phi Phi Don are equally stunning. Ton Sai Bay on Phi Phi Don is a gorgeous sight especially from the simply named Viewpoint, a climb of about twenty minutes. Phi Phi Le is the second largest island in the archipelago, its chief attraction being Maya Beach (the Beach of movie fame). The island offers fantastic dives and Maya Beach is arguably the most pristine beach in the chain. Phi Phi Le is also home to the Phi Phi National Park and the diversity of coral to be seen makes it a great place to snorkel. Ferries leave from Phuket and Krabi daily.
A more secluded beach than Rai Leh or Ao Nang, Phra Nang is a short boat trip away from Rai Leh or even a longish walk. The swimming is superb and a lot of visitors also go kayaking. Nearby is the Princess Cave or the Tham Phra Nang filled with phallic looking sculptures. As usual, the cliffs, sea and sunsets are magnificient.
Small by most wildlife park standards, Phanom Bencha still boasts an impressive line-up of inhabitants including clouded leopards, black panthers, tigers, Asiatic black bears, barking deer, Malayan tapirs, leaf monkeys, gibbons and various tropical birds. The park is located along the spine of the mountain bearing the same name and resembling a person prostrate in prayer. Comprising around fifty kilometres of virgin rainforest, Phanom Bencha remains devoid of any public transport. The best way to get here is by taxi or bike from Krabi as a day trip.
