The capital of Meghalaya and also its largest city, Shillong is quaint yet cosmopolitan- with both scenic views and pine covered slopes, and bustling markets and busy streets. Visit the beautiful view point at Shillong Peak, at a height of 1965 metres, you can see the majestic peaks of the Himalayas, the plains of Sylhet and sweeping views of the town from here. Ward’s Lake is a popular hangout for both tourists and locals, and is set amidst beautiful gardens. Take a boat ride on this quaint artificial lake, feed the fish and watch the ducks swim by. There are many waterfalls in this region; Elephant falls being the most famous. A beautifully maintained hilly park houses a small waterfall that ends in a small pool, next to which you can picnic and spend time lounging around. The Don Bosco Museum is one of the best in the North East, with over four floors and a huge collection of arts, artefacts, unique musical instruments and cultural exhibits from the entire North-Eastern region of India. A must visit for those interested in the culture and traditions of these parts. Walk down the busy market stretches of Police Bazaar and Bara Bazaar to experience local life in these parts. Stop at a swish cafe in the upmarket Laitumkhrah area, or just stroll down the quaint wooded streets taking in the stunning views.
Around an hour away from Shillong is the town of Cherrapunjee or Sohra, as it is locally known. Having once held the title for the rainiest place on earth, this town is best experienced in the monsoon. Rolling green meadows, misty mountains in the distance and quaint tin-roofed houses give this town a fairy-tale like vibe. Cherrapunjee is best known for its magnificent, thundering waterfalls, at their mightiest during the monsoon. The Mawsmai Falls are the fourth highest falls in India, cascading from a height of 1035 feet. The Noh Kalikai Falls is another major waterfall that flows down a steep mountain gorge. Cherrapunjee conceals some of India’s best natural treasures- from living root bridges to limestone caves- and promises a thrilling holiday for adventure lovers.
Probably India’s best kept secret is Mawlynnong, the cleanest village in Asia. Along the India-Bangladesh border is a quaint little village with cobbled streets, manicured lawns, thatched-roof cottages and flowers in every colour imaginable. With an astounding literacy rate, polite children greet you at every corner, and scurry to pick up even the tiniest bit of litter lying around. Bamboo dustbins every few steps ensure the town is always spotlessly clean. Experience a magical stay in an authentic bamboo tree-house, complete with balcony and bedroom, while in Mawlynnong. An ingeniously designed ‘Sky-View’ atop a tree gives a magnificent view of the Bangladesh plains as the wind buffets you around on the tree top. A rushing river dotted with waterfalls and calm pools ensure great views at every turn. Mawlynnong is definitely worth a visit- both to experience and learn the ways of sustainable travel.

Set in the Khasi Hilla of Meghalaya is Barapani, a picturesque town built around the huge Umiam Lake. Barapani, literally meaning ‘Big Water’, has a bevy of legends behind its name. The most popular amongst these is that two sisters from heaven decided to come down to earth and made their way towards Meghalaya. However, only one reached Meghalaya while the other was lost. The one who reached grieved for her sister, and her tears formed the Umiam Lake, also translating to ‘The Lake of Tears.’ It is one of the most picturesque spots in Meghalaya, with pine forests, a shimmering lake and magnificent mountains. Barapani is an hour’s drive from Shillong and ideal for day trips or picnics.
