Situated in Piazza Duomo, Milan’s main square, the Duomo is Milan’s main Catholic cathedral and one of the largest in the world. An ancient Gothic structure in white marble, the church has an impressive facade adorned with thousands of statues. Hundreds of spires and pinnacles rise up, defining the skyline of the city. Built in 1366, the cathedral can house up to 40,000 people, and its interiors are a treasure house of artefacts.
A large and elegant arcade, lined with shops, bookstores, cafés and a famous restaurant, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is a magnificent piece of architecture constructed in 1865. It features a 155 foot high glass dome, situated right above the central octagonal area, and beautiful mosaics on the floor. It is formed from two glass-vaulted arcades that intersect at right angles in an octagon. The galleria is named in honour of the first king of united Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II.
The Tempio della Vittoria is a marble memorial located opposite the barracks of Garibaldi. It commemorates Milanese residents who perished in World War I. The structure has an octagonal shape and features three floors. It houses a number of monuments inside, such as the magnificent Mausoleo di Teodorico and the elaborate Rosa dei Venti di Atene.
This is the castle where the ruling dynasties of Sforza-Visconti resided. The Castello Sforzesco is a majestic building with wonderful interiors. It has courtyards built in Gothic-Renaissance style, halls designed by Leonardo, and frescos painted by master painters such as Bramante. It now hosts important art exhibitions and also houses museums.
A Temple to Opera music, built at the end of the 1700s over the remains of the Church of Santa Maria della Scala, from which the theatre then took its name, the old opera house was built by Giuseppe Piermarini. It is home to the Museo del Teatro (theatre museum) and houses a fine collection of sculpture, paintings and ceramics, and also La Scala's Ballet School. Some of the greatest names in opera, like Bellini and Puccini, have made their debuts in this theatre.
Also known as the Palazzo Reale di Milan, this palace is located in central Milan and was the seat of the government for many centuries. The building dates back to 1100 and has been home to the most powerful men in Milan over the centuries, from the Viscontis to the Sforza family, the Spanish governors and Austrian rulers. Several temporary art exhibitions are held inside the building now days.
This is the only intact monument in Milan that dates back to the Roman era. These sixteen columns that stand opposite the Basilica of San Lorenzo are all that remains of an ancient Roman temple that probably dates back to the 2nd century. The Basilica of San Lorenzo is a beautiful 4th century basilica with a lovely courtyard and a statue of the emperor Constantine.
