Thirteen kilometres from Munnar, Mattupetty is located at a height of 1700 mts and the home base of the Indo-Swiss Livestock Project. This is a niche dairy farm with more than 100 species of cattle and worth a visit. Mattupetty is also known for the dam and lake, which are wonderful places for a fun picnic. If you are visiting the place, don' forget to walk over to the Kundala Lake and tea plantations. The dairy farm is open from 9.00 am to 11.00 am and 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm.
The nearly-extinct Nilgiri Tahr resides in the Eravikulam National Park, which is also graced by the Anaimudi Peak. There is a museum at the entrance of the park that you might find interesting. Interestingly, it's the hills of Rajamalai that the rare Neelakurinji flowers choose to grace, once in every 12 years.
About 60 km from Munnar, the Chinnar Wild Sanctuary is a haven for Asian elephants, Sambar deer, Gaur and the giant Malabar squirrel, among others. With prior permission from the Wildlife Warden of the Idukki Division, you may be able to arrange a nature walk through the forest. Escorted by a forest guard and taken in groups, the walk is amazing.
In mood for another picnic? Drive seven km from Munnar to the breathtaking hill retreat at Devikulam that offers panoramic views of undulating valleys, tea estates, a lake with clear blue waters, springs and bubbling streams views that seem to jump out from a story book. Explore the place on foot and stop every now and then to take some great photographs. And don' forget to take along your fishing rod because the Sita Devi Lake here is well-known for trout fishing. Note: You will have to take permission from the Secretary of High Range Angling Association before fishing.
You wouldn' want to miss seeing the first Hydro Electric Project in God's Own Country. And while there, do step into pages of history at Chithirapuram. With rows of quaint colonial bungalows and cottages, this place retains its old-world charm.
This old stone church with its beautiful stained glass windows and brass plaques in the memory of tea planters is recommended for travellers with a penchant for old-world architecture and history. Built in 1910 by the British, it is now run by the Church Mission Society and is a place that is frequented by visitors for the serenity and peace hat it offers.
Marayoor serves up a heady concoction of history and exotica. Known for its naturally growing sandalwood trees and a sandalwood factory run by the Forest Department, Marayoor is equally well-known for its caves with relics and murals from the New Stone Age civilization.
The highest place on the Munnar-Kodaikanal road and on the Tamil Nadu and Kerala border, Top Station serves up some breathtaking views of the Western Ghats. It also has remnants of the old ropeway station that once-upon-a-time was used to send out chests of tea and is another area where the blue Neelakurunji flower blooms. In a nutshell, Top Station makes for a top tourist hotspot.
Established by the well-known ornithologist Salim Ali in 1983, this 25-sq-km bird sanctuary is home to several interesting and rare species of birds like the Malabar grey hornbills, parakeets, woodpeckers, rose-billed roller and Lankan frogmouth. An interesting place for keen bird watchers and photographers.
