Check out the underwater inhabitants of Lake Wakatipu at Queenstown’s Underwater Observatory. Keep a keen eye out for freshwater eels and the favourite of the kiddies – the scaup (diving ducks), which dive down and swim right past the windows.
Sit back and relax as the best views in the region unfold before your eyes in the steepest cable car lift in the Southern Hemisphere!En route you will enjoy a spectacular 220 degree panoramic view of Queenstown, with breath taking views of Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Walter Peak and Cecil Peak.
See real kiwi and up to twenty other native birds and reptiles, including the tuatara, in the breeding sanctuary. Stroll around for a self-guided exploration or take a private guided tour. Don’t miss the Live Bird Show, Kiwi Feedings and the Te Maori cultural performance.
For a snapshot of early settlers' lives, visit John Williams's cottage, Queenstown’s oldest home. An annexe of Arrowtown’s Lake District Museum and Gallery, it was built in 1864 and remains close to its original condition, including 1930s wallpaper. The cottage and its 1920s garden are now home to the very cool Vesta shop and cafe.
The present church was built in 1932. The gift of a faithful parishioner, this pretty wood-beamed building has a beautiful organ and colourful stained glass. St. Peter's Church contains some beautiful items of furniture, the most noteworthy being the carved Eagle Lectern.
It is essentially the last remaining evidence of the high capital second stage of the gold mining days in Central Otago. It is representative of the last of the "speculators dream" projects and as such has a place not only in gold mining history but in the history of commercial development.
