The Pantheon was constructed almost 2000 years ago as the “Temple of all Gods”. The massive pillared entrance opens up a magnificent world inside- with wonderfully preserved statues and carvings. The domed ceiling is a spectacle in itself, coated in Roman bronze and allowing a shaft of light to shine through its centre.
Imagine the roar of thousands as gladiators meet in combat. Or the bated breath of the audience as hungry lions charge at condemned prisoners. It all happened here, at one of Rome’s most extraordinary monuments. The famed venue where emperors delighted their public with games of honour and displays of power. It is a marvellous elliptical-shaped edifice in the true style of Roman architecture, and a must visit.
Housed in a massive complex called the Palazzo Apostolico Vaticano, alongside the Vatican and Belvedere Palaces, are some of Rome’s finest museums. Each gallery contains treasures of great historic importance and beautiful works of art. Worth visiting are the Rafael Rooms, also known as the Stanze of Rafael. Chosen by Pope Julius II as his residence, these rooms were painted by Rafael himself in the 16th century.
Walk through the Vatican museums to arrive at the Sistine chapel, renowned the world over for its Renaissance art. The frescoes adorning the walls are some of the most beautiful in the world, and the great ceiling was painted by Michelangelo himself, making it his finest work of art.
Nestled in the heart of the Vatican, an awe-inspiring structure stands out amongst all the other churches in the vicinity. Take in the magnificent columns, intricate carvings, beautiful sculptures and the enormous facade. Worked on by legendary painters Michelangelo and Rafael, St. Peter’s is a work of art.
Toss a coin in to return to the city, two coins to fall in love with an Italian, and three coins to marry them! At the convergence of three roads rises the flamboyant baroque structure that is Rome’s largest and best known fountain.
Housed in the Casino Borghese is the grand collection of Scipione Caffarelli Borghese. A patron and collector of the 16th century, the gallery includes the work of Caravaggio and Bernini amongst others. A must visit for the beautiful paintings and sculptures housed here.
What remains of Rome’s oldest and most famous forum is a sprawling ruin, but is still impressive. A forum in ancient Rome was the centre of public life, with a religious complex, market and civil centre all at the same place. Get a view of the 7th century relic from the Palazzo Senatorio. The Imperial Forums lie to the north east of Via dei Fori Imperiali. Also in ruin, Trajan’s, Augustus’ and Nerva’s Forums boast of pillars and columns constructed in 42 BC.
