Located on Pamban Island and isolated from the Indian mainland, Rameswaram is a place of great importance in Hindu mythology. It is believed that the Adam’s bridge, a geographical feature that seems to connect the Indian mainland with Sri Lanka, is the same path which, according to the Ramayana; was built by Rama to rescue Sita from Ravana’s Lanka. Due to this legend, the Ramanathaswamy temple, located at the middle of the city, is said to be one of the four holiest places for Hindus. This temple stands as an epitome of Dravidian architectural style of the medieval ages. Also known as the Benaras of the south, Rameswaram also hold one of the twelve Jyothirlingas of Lord Shiva.
