Ranthambore National Park is one of the biggest and most renowned national parks in Northern India. The park is located in the SawaiMadhopur district of southeastern Rajasthan, which is about 130 km from Jaipur. Ranthambore was once the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur and its royal heritage manifests itself in the picturesque hunting lodges, umbrella shaped domes chhatris and old fortifications that dot the park. Ranthambore National park is spread over an area of 1,334 sq km along with its nearby sanctuaries like - the Mansingh Sanctuary and the Kaila Devi Sanctuary. The Park is majorly famous for its tigers and is one of the best locations in India to see the majestic predators in its natural habitat. Tigers are readily observed during daylight, hunting or lazing about, oblivious of jeep-loads of tourists and their cameras. Ranthambore is also counted as a famous heritage site because of the pictorial ruins that dot the wildlife park. Certainly, a visit to the Park is a treat for every wildlife and nature lover. Ranthambore's forests are of the tropical dry deciduous type and were once part of the jungles covering central India. The most prominent tree is the dhok, an extremely hardy tree, capable of withstanding prolonged droughts. The park has a rich diversity of plants and animals with over 200 species of birds, 30 species of mammals including the tiger and 12 species of reptile. It holds several permanent lakes complete with lurking crocodiles. The three biggest lakes are Padam talab, Malik talab and Rajbagh. Ranthambore was amongst the first of nine reserves to be included in Project Tiger, launched during 1973.
