A small village in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, Shirdi is a significant place of pilgrimage for the devotees of Sai Baba, one of the greatest saints of the nineteenth century. According to legend, Sai Baba appeared in Shirdi as a ‘Bal Yogi’ and used it as a centre for his preachings. Shirdi has a number of temples honoring Sai Baba, which are frequented by devotees from all over the world. The village is fragrant with the smell of incense and is an idyllic place to connect with the Almighty. It is also symbolic of communal harmony, as pilgrims worship the saint not only in Hindu temples but also in mosques, because he preached about both religions.
Marathi and Hindi are the commonly spoken languages.
