South India Tourism & Travel Guide - Know Before you Go!

South India Overview

The southern half of India is the biggest zone to cover, in terms of travelling. Known mostly for famous temples and shrines scattered all over, South India is an abode of breathtaking natural beauty. South India is a traveller’s delight—from the pristine beaches of Kovalam and Mahabalipuram to the unbelievably lush Kerala backwaters like Vembanad Lake, Alapphuza Canal and Malabar Coast, and the tranquil valley in Ooty, to the Nilgiri Hills and then, down to the mythologically significant coast of Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari, a trip to the South will never fail to charm. The trip could be started from Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh with the iconic Charminar, Hussain Sagar lake and Ramoji Film City topping the list. In Kerala, there are some irresistible destinations for the honeymooners like the hill stations of Munnar and Kodaikanal. In Tamil Nadu, there are popular beaches like Marina and the Golden Beach, the city of Chennai and, of course, the Tirumala Venkatashwara Temple located at the peak of Tirupati Hills. Situated at the sea coast, Mahabalipuram is a seventh-century port city and is famous for housing a number of temples and historic monuments built in between the seventh and ninth century. Ancient sculptures depicting mythological characters on a cave is another attraction here. The city of Madurai is among the top attractions of South India since it hosts the famous Meenakshi Temple, a site as important for pilgrims as for art lovers. Vivekananda Rock, situated on the sea at the edge of the country, offers a short but memorable voyage, while the stupendous palace in Mysore and Rock Fort in Trichy still stand strong to introduce visitors to the history of Tipu Sultan, the cave temple built by the Pallavas and history of the Carnatic wars. The city of Bangalore, famous for the Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens, is also a must-visit destination.
