One of the famed Seven Sisters of India’s North-East, Sikkim boasts of stunning landscapes, warm and friendly locals, great cuisine, and a cultural hot-bed. Sikkim is accessible by road from Siliguri airport. The mighty Mount Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world, sits on the Sikkim-Nepal border. The Indo-China border at Nathu La is a must visit while in Sikkim, as are the many monasteries. A deep Buddhist culture prevails here, and some of the oldest and most beautiful monasteries in the country are located in Sikkim.

Meghalaya

A 3 hour drive from Guwahati takes you to Shillong, the beautiful state capital of Meghalaya. Spend a few days in this alpine retreat, with stunning views and cool mountain air. Visit the Elephant Falls and viewpoint at Shillong Peak. Drive on to Cherrapunjee, known to be one of the rainiest places in the world. This quaint town is best experienced when sheets of torrential rain beat down on tin roofs in the city. Much of Meghalaya is covered in dense forest, concealing some of the best known secrets of our country. Natural root bridges, limestone caves, stunning waterfalls and beautiful rivers all lie amidst these towering mountains.

Darjeeling

Darjeeling is a quaint town in North Bengal, and is easily accessible from Assam by road or rail. Reminiscent of the British rule, much of the architecture in this town has a Victorian flavour to it. A pleasant hill station set amidst lush green hills with plenty of walking trails, Darjeeling makes an ideal getaway. The town has an interesting mix of Nepali immigrants and Tibetan refugees, and the culture of the town reflects this mix. The popular street market, Chowrasta, is lined with stalls selling all kinds of items, from clothes to souvenirs, and the street is lined with interesting eateries as well.
