The former summer residence of the Prussian kings and German kaisers, and famed for its landscaped gardens, Potsdam borders Berlin and is the capital of Brandenburg. Most of the tourist attractions in the city are UNESCO World Heritage sites and have been reconstructed after the bombings in the Second World War. The New Garden with the Marmorpalais and the Palace Cecilienhof is one such. The Sanssouci Park is a huge park with a rococo palace and another heritage site. Walk down the Holländisches Viertel, the Dutch quarter divided into blocks, while you’re here.
Situated in Southwest Germany, this forested mountain range is a mystical and unique location to visit in the country. Also known as Schwarzwald, the name can be traced back to the Romans who referred to the thickly forested mountains as “Black Forest" because the dense growth of conifers blocked out the sunlight. The city of Freiburg is known as the ‘Jewel of the Black Forest’ because it’s the warmest and sunniest part of Germany. Go hiking through the tall trees, indulge in some water sports at the Mummelsee lake, go mountain biking or paragliding to get your fill of thrills.
A pretty little island in the Baltic Sea, Usedom belongs to both Germany and Poland. The larger western part belongs to Germany and is well-connected to Berlin by train. Heringsdorf is the seaside resort town on this island, ideal to kick back and spend some time soaking in the sun and surf. The Baltic Coast is serene and picturesque and ideal for a day or a weekend trip.
