Kenya Tour & Travel Guide - Tourist Places near Kenya
Lamu
Visit perhaps the only carless island in the world. Lamu town is the most perfect example of a historical Swahili city in the world. Lamu’s narrow streets remain unchanged and life moves at the same pace as it always has. There are no vehicles on this island, and the donkey and the dhow remain the dominant form of transport. The old Stone Town in Lamu is a maze of houses with airy courtyards, palm trees and a general air of having stepped back in time. Rush hour here means a street too narrow to let two donkeys pass. With air that is scented with spice, an amazingly friendly native population and gorgeous beaches, Lamu is a must-visit destination. See it before it vanishes!
Zanzibar
How can one not want to visit a place that has a name as magical as Zanzibar? While they lie off the coast of Tanzania and belong technically to that country, Zanzibar and Pemba can be visited from Kenya by air or on a dhow trip. The Stone Town in Zanzibar is as lovely as the one in Lamu and the beaches are spectacular. If cloves and coconuts are the theme in Zanzibar, nearby Pemba is not quite as benevolent. The home of witch doctors and voodoo, Pemba also possesses equally pristine beaches, turquoise waters and verdant hills.
Marine National Park, Malindi
Malindi numbers Vasco de Gama amongst its visitors (stopover on his way to India) and still boasts of a pillar erected by its most famous tourist. Famed for its coral reefs that lie just a thousand feet off its shore, underwater life is best seen at Malindi National Marine Park or nearby Watamu. Game fishing, surfing and simply relaxing on the beach are popular local pastimes and the narrow streets and market of Malindi's old town are worth a visit.
