Leh is quite cut-off from the rest of the country, but if you’re looking to get out and get a change in scenery, Manali is directly connected by bus. Head to Himachal and experience the lush green beauty of this mountain countryside. Walk down the streets of old Manali, dotted with cafes and frequented by hippies. Visit the Rohtang Pass for a panoramic view of the mountains and valleys below, take a dip in the hot springs at Vashisht and make a stop at the Hadimba temple.
The valley of Spiti lies to the south of Ladakh. The region is closer to Manali, an approximate 6 hours by cab. The Kunzum pass forms the gateway to Spiti and as one drives through the pass, the Bara-Sigri glacier - the second longest glacier in the world - comes into view, and is breathtaking to watch. The largely arid landscape of Spiti gives it an aura of haunted beauty. As a number of maritime fossils have been found in the region, Spiti has also come to be known as the 'fossil park of the world'. There are a number of monasteries such as the Kye - the largest in Spiti. From afar, it looks distinctly similar to Thiksey monastery near Leh. The monastery is known for its beautiful murals, rare manuscripts, and an interesting set of weapons that were probably used to ward off attackers in an earlier era. Hundreds of monks receive their training in this monastery every year.
In an ideal world, Sonamarg would have been one of the most popular settings for a romantic film. Its lush green valleys, spitting icy cold streams and panoramic views give a brief trailer of how Kashmir really is, in most streets and corners. If you are driving down from Ladakh to Srinagar, Sonamarg is reached two hours before your final stop, and after the arid, alpha-male, sombre landscape of Ladakh, it is almost as if you are moving from a black-and-white world to one of thousand colours, so many that your heart is bound to sing its favourite song. If you are in Sonamarg sometime, as you should be, do visit the Thajiwas glacier. The town also acts as a base to many of the Himalayan treks. Its forests are dense, full of alpine trees and great for bird watching. Also, you could visit Nilagrad, where the Indus meets the other mountain rivers and takes them under its own command.
