A tiny island, just about 500km northeast of mainland Mauritius, Rodrigues is one of the most pleasant surprises the area has to offer. This beautiful mountainous spot is a volcanic creation only one million years old. It's hard to feel connected to any part of the wider world once you step foot here. Entirely mountainous, far drier than the mainland and with fruits and vegetables planted everywhere, the feel is very different from Mauritius. The beaches, while fewer than on the mainland, are stunning. The island also offers some of the best diving experiences with its extensive treasure of coral reefs.

Madagascar

You might have heard this a few times, but there really is no place like Madagascar in this world. There are actually 70 varieties of lemur here, including one that shrieks like a wailing police whistle, the world’s most gigantic and tiniest chameleons, and the last stomping ground of the elephant bird, the largest bird that ever lived. In Ifaty (South Madagascar) you will see forests of twisted, spiny ‘octopus’ trees and in the west, marvel at the bottle-shaped baobabs. And be on the look out for the carnivorous pitcher plant found around Ranomafana, there are over 60 varieties of them. Not for nothing is Madagascar regarded as the world’s number one conservation priority.
