The ancient city of Ujjain lies in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. It has been an important city in Indian history as well as mythology. According to the Mahabharata, Ujjain, which was prehistorically known as Ujjaini, was the capital of the Avanti Kingdom. According to the text, Krishna obtained his education here. The city of Ujjain was once ruled by the great ruler, Chandragupta II and the city has produced renown scholars like Brahmagupta and Kalidasa. Because of its rich history and its significance in Hindu mythology, the city has a number of famous temples and religious sites. The city is one of the seven sacred cities for Hindus and hosts the Kumbh Mela annually. Ujjain also has one of the twelve holy Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Standing strong by its glorious history, the city of Ujjain is now on the path of modernization and progress.
