One of India’s largest and best-known national parks, especially famous for the rare one-horned rhino, Kaziranga, situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, is a major attraction in this part of the country. A large area of 430 square kms, the park is open grassland interspersed with streams and lakes, dense forests and marshes. Safaris in this park are most exciting as you may encounter rhinos in their natural habitat of the tall elephant grass. Herds of wild elephant are also common here and the baby elephants particularly, make for a heart-warming sight. The Indian Bison, Swamp Deer, Sambar, Hog Deer, Sloth Bear, Tiger Leopard, Leopard Cat, Jungle Cat, Hog Badger, Capped Langur, Hoolock Gibbon can all be found here. Pelicans and Hornbills are also a common sight and bird lovers can get a good look at them. Elephant safaris and open jeep safaris are the options available here, and both are equally exciting. Sitting high atop an elephant, you are likely to get closer to the wild animals and a good view of them from a height. Experience the thrill of seeing the magnificent Rhino up close as they bathe, eat and amble along doing their daily business. Kaziranga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Bordering Bhutan, this tiger reserve in Assam is one of the most magnificent national parks of India. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it covers an area of 520 square kms and is covered with dense forest. The Manas National Park is situated on the Himalayan foothills and extends to Bhutan where it is known as the Royal Manas National Park. It has been declared a Project Tiger Reserve, an Elephant Reserve and a Biosphere Reserve. It is also home to the rare golden langur. Amongst other animals found here are the rhino, wild buffalos, elephants, gaur, swamp deer, capped langur and clouded leopard. Explore the dense vegetation on elephant back, and see these wild animals in their natural habitat- eating, playing, in search of water and prey. Jeep safaris take you deeper into the jungle whereas the elephant rides are restricted within a few kilometers. Many species of birds also frequent this park. The major species include Bengal Florican, Giant Hornbills, Jungle Fowls, Bulbuls, Brahminy Ducks, The Manas River flows close to the park, attracting many animals to this source of water. Other endangered and rare species found here include the Assam Roofed Turtle, Hispid Hare, and Pygmy Hog.
