More than 4500 animals roam on over 14 hectares of land at one of Europe’s most interesting zoos. There’s a bear castle and a Grzimek Haus, where artificial darkness is simulated in order to observe nocturnal animals’ activities. Situated in the heart of Frankfurt, this is an ideal way to spend the day with your kids, or if you’re a nature enthusiast. Lions, rhinos, crocodiles, apes, and other species from all over the world are housed here in different environments like a jungle and an Exotarium. The Exotarium houses penguins, fresh and saltwater fish, reptiles and amphibians from the North Sea to the Amazon.
An old historical town area in Frankfurt with a castle complex and a palace, Höchst is placed on the bank of the Main River. This is a worthwhile destination for an excursion, with medieval streets to walk through, picturesque buildings such as the Bolongaro Palace (Bolongaro-Palast), the City Fortifications, the Main gate, the Customs Tower and the Old Town Hall. A special attraction on the banks of Main is Höchst Castle, the former residence of the archbishop of Mainz, which was built in several stages between the 13th and the 16th centuries. The picturesque castle square invites visitors to linger with its pleasant guesthouses and a view of the Customs Tower.
On either side of the Main River are some of Frankfurt’s finest museums and exhibitions. Art lovers and history enthusiasts can spend hours walking this stretch and enjoying fine views along with great displays. The German Museum of Architecture displays various types of exhibits about buildings and architecture. The German Film Museum displays the art and history of film making. The Giersch Museum covers painting, photography, sculpture, graphic art, architecture and applied arts.
Take a ride on the Ebbelwei Express, a colourful tram carriage which takes visitors to the finest sights in Frankfurt and offers an original city tour. Enjoy a glass of original Ebbelwei or cider as you leisurely soak in the sights and sounds of Frankfurt. Travel from the Römer to the zoo, crossing the Main and travelling through the Ebbelwei district in Sachsenhausen. Then proceed across the Main again to the central station and to the exhibition grounds.
