Stroll along the South Bank back into history. Start with a trek to the Tower and listen to the Yeomen Warders recount the centuries of treason and murder that the Tower has seen. Gasp at the First Star of Africa, the largest cut diamond in the world and see the Tower drawbridge being lifted. Check out the Design Museum and head onto Queen’s Walk to approach the beautiful recreated Globe Theatre. You can either take in a matinee performance here or be chic and visit the ultra-modern Tate. Tired? Have a coffee or a Guinness at Gabriel’s Wharf and walk out of history into a ride on London’s giant ferry wheel, the London Eye.
Fascinating fact: More than 27 tonnes of strawberries and 7,000 litres of cream are consumed every year during the two weeks of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. While Centre Court tickets may be a tad difficult to get, you should be able to manage one of the early matches.
What more can we say? A huge array of wildlife and ocean life awaits you at the Zoo and the Aquarium with fantastic interactive exhibits. A must for families travelling with kids.
From ABBA to Cats to Agatha Christie’s Mousetrap (why it has run forever is my question), leaving London without visiting the theatres is a strict no-no, given the sheer variety of plays, musicals and concerts running. Tickets can be booked online in advance (cheaper) or at the booths in Leicester Square.
Or Princess Diana. Or Johnny Depp. Or (if you must) Aishwarya Rai. Of course, we’re talking about Madame Tussaud’s. From the A-list party exhibits to the Royal figures, this is the waxen who’s-who that everyone goes to.
Prepare yourself for the fact that you aren’t likely to find “cheap bargains” and Portobello Market becomes a fun place for a Saturday outing.
