Being an island country, of course the best and most interesting things to do in Maldvies are sea related be it its fabulous scuba diving snorkelingn or deep sea fishing. You can also go island hopping to the various atolls.
On 13 February 1981, a freighter named the Maldives Victory ran at full throttle into the airport island of Hulhule, and sank with crate-loads of merchandise on it. Thankfully, none of the passengers were hurt and managed to find their way to shore safely. Though a large number of rescue teams tried to salvage the drowned goods, a lot of it was rendered useless due to contact with salt water. Today the wreck is an excellent diving spot and is one of the most preferred places by divers, both amateur and professional. It is also the residence to all sorts of delightful sea creatures; a large school of batfish looks back at you suspiciously as you cross them. If you are swimming around the wreck, don' t be surprised if a few humphead wrasses think it is their duty to escort you around. In the mossy passageways, on the rusted deck, in dark nooks and crannies of this ship, is the home of hundreds of animal species that can normally be found on reefs, and in grottoes and underwater caverns. There is also a large sea turtle usually fast asleep at the tip of the bowsprit of the Maldive Victory. If you are a diving enthusiast, this could be one place that could make your hearts soar, with wonder.
Contrary to what the name suggests, a trip on the Whale Submarine is not for watching whales. The submarine is absolutely state of the art and functions everyday from 9 am to 8 pm. The tour takes place for 45 minutes, and the submarine motors off to gorgeous coral gardens and habitats teeming with life in the mysterious lagoons. The last stop is at the depth of 40 metres or 120 feet below sea level close to an under-water cave. Sometimes, if you have luck in your pockets, you might even see a manta ray or a shark passing your machine proudly.
There are a number of great snorkeling and diving sites, with Banana Reef and Fish Head being top favourites. The Sea Explorers Dive School is the popular choice, and they conduct dive courses and trips at reasonable rates.
