Voga Longa, the yearly equivalent of a marathon on water, is open to all- the challenge is to row 32 km in 210 minutes or less to receive a certificate of attendance at the finish line. The track covers different parts of Venice, and the locals always line up for a friendly cheer as you race.
Regata 'Storica (Historic fleet event) is held on the first Sunday of every September, a display of almost a hundred varieties of venetian boats from years past. It includes several races, and offers great opportunites for the photographer.
The islands, namely Murano, Burano and Torcello, have dedicated boat services. The Lace Museum in Burano is certainly worth a visit. The Murano glass making tour is not be missed, be sure to check with your hotel if they have a free tour. The towns here are picturesque to the extreme. Though it may seem otherwise, a visit is not complete without a trip to via vaporetto at 'Cimitero', Venice's graveyard, with its poignant section dedicated to deceased children. There is also a free toilet there.
