A largely temperate climate, NZ is known to have unpredictable or rapidly changing weather conditions. Because New Zealand lies in the southern hemisphere, the average temperature decreases as you travel south. The north of New Zealand is subtropical and the south temperate. The warmest months are December, January and February, and the coldest June, July and August. In summer, the average maximum temperature ranges between 20-30 C and in winter between 10-15 C with the inland alpine areas of the South Island going as low as -10 C.
The warmer months (November to April) are ideal for outdoor activities, while December to February is the time when NZ comes alive with food and wine festivals, concerts and sports events. But December in the far north can be rainy. If you are coming for the snow, plan your trip between June and August, which is also the skiing season. If you are looking at avoiding the crowds, come between wither October and November or April and May.
