El Rastro

If you can drag yourself out of bed on a Sunday morning after a hectic Saturday night, head to El Rastro, one of Europe's most fascinating flea markets. It’s been an open-air market for half a millennium. Experience the madness at Plaza de Cascorro and the maze of streets branching off it as you go through a treasure of cheap clothes, luggage, antiques, old photos of Madrid, old flamenco records, faux designer purses, grungy T-shirts, household goods and electronics.

Gil

If you are looking for the exquisitely embroidered mantones and mantoncillos (traditional Spanish shawls worn by women) and delicate mantillas (veils) head to Gin – a dark shop, dating back to 1880.

Loewe

Started in a leather workshop in the middle of the 19th-century, Loewe is one of Spain's most respected high fashion exports. The company has stuck to its leather roots, and also offers a great range of ready-to-wear in its shop on Gran Vía.

Oriol Balaguer

If you want to pick up chocolates for back home, visit this chocolate boutique opened by the famous Catalan pastry chef Oriol Balaguer. This is a combination of small art gallery and fashion boutique, while being dedicated to exquisite chocolate collections and cakes.
