Technically built only as a preliminary line of defence to protect enclosed cities from foreign attacks, these fortifications have served many-a-purpose. They have stood their guard for centuries, tell riveting stories of the great emperors who built them and symbolize boundless might and strength. We pay a tribute to the beautiful and grand fortresses of India with a glorious past that have made the nation proud.
1. Red Fort
Agra
The fortress, made in red sandstone, was initially a brick fort that holds prime importance in Indian history. This is where the whole country was governed from by the then emperors, among which was Mughal Emperor Akbar, who also chose to reside in the fortress during his reign.
2. Amber Fort
Jaipur
This one has to be on the list and among the top few, given its magnificence and spectacular views from the top. The main courtyard ‘Jaleb Chowk’, ‘Sheesh Mahal’ and many other parts of the fort have been favourite shooting locations for various Bollywood movies.
3. Gwalior Fort
Gwalior
This massive fort is centuries old and miles long. It is perched high atop the hill and was built to form the walls of the city to protect it from being captured by outsiders. The fortress is rumoured to contain some secret vaults containing copious treasure for which the place has been searched over and over again.
4. Golkonda Fort
Hyderabad
Most of it has been rendered to ruins now; this huge fortress holds an abandoned city within itself. The Indo-Islamic architecture is prominently seen in the structures and intricate art adorning the walls. You can still see some bastions in this fortress still loaded with cannons.
5. Jaisalmer Fort
Jaisalmer
Also known as Sonar Quila, this literally golden fort supports the yellow sandstone’s rustic appearance among the golden sands of the desert. Declared as one of the World Heritage Sites, it also happens to be one of the largest fortifications in the world.
6. Mehrangarh Fort
Jodhpur
This, one of the largest forts in India, sits at a height of 400 Ft above Jodhpur and is visible from every nook and corner of the blue city. The fortress houses beautiful palaces and temples, which flaunt intricately carved panels and the elaborate architecture; totally worth a visit.
7. Chittorgarh Fort
Chittorgarh
The grandest of the grand forts in Rajasthan, this fort has seen much upheaval in history and has been the seat of some prominent decisions in the past during its glorious times. The fort is too big to explore in a jiffy, so better take some time off to see it, since it offers some of the most amazing sunset views.
We would not mind adding more such forts to our list, in case we missed some. Do drop in your comments to let us know which ones you would like to see here.
