WAH’s Top Ten Road -Trip Songs

So yesterday we were sitting doing what we usually do, some exploring travel destinations, some creating marketing plans, some strategizing itineraries and me, well me delighting everyone with my sheer presence. In the middle of all that exploring and delighting, a customer called up regarding a road trip he was planning to undertake. After a long conversation, we sent him a detailed mail on road conditions, rest stops and weather. And a list of songs, for the ‘road trip’ mood. Experiences are often created from the little things in life.

Do find below a set of songs we have shortlisted for all the road-trippers out there. Note that these have been cheekily, oops, carefully selected for a wide range of travelers who have different interests, different moods and different blood groups. Okay, not the last.

Ladies and gentlemen, the grand list …. {pa pa ra pa ra}

1) Dil Chahta Hai (DCH): Peppy, catchy, this is a song for the ages. The picturization presents a group of friends on a road trip to Goa, hence it is at the very top of our list.

2) Hum Kis Gali Ja Rahe Hain (Atif Aslam): This is for the lost traveler, for the poor fellows who lost their way on the trip and are stopping after every forty metres, asking for directions to anybody in their path - man, woman, cow, penguin. Well, if it’s a penguin, they should know they have reached either New Zealand or Antarctica, instead of Aurangabad where they were originally headed.

3) Hum Mein Hai Hero (Hero Honda): This is for those men who during the course of the road trip suddenly started feeling a little insecure about their masculinity and urgently need a song that reaffirms their manhood.

4) Yuhi Chala Chal Rahi (Swades): This is for the road-tripper who benevolently gave a ‘lift’ to a hitchhiker with a lissome figure and long hair, but only once the person was inside the car does he realize that it’s a man. Of course they can’t make any conversation now and must sing “Yuhi Chala” on loop for the entire seven hours left in the journey.

5) Josh (Shaitan): This is for all the cool Delhi and Mumbai boys and girls whose idea of a road trip is from their home to Blue Frog pub. If they pass out on the way, do blare “josh” loudly, it might just wake them up for a couple of minutes.

6) Masti Ki Paatshala (RDB): Another youth song, this is for the road-tripper who loves fun, tight t-shirts and from time to time standing up and spanking his own bum, pretending that it’s actually a dance move. A roaring hit … literally.

7) Deewana Tera Deewana (Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na): This is not exactly a road trip song in the conventional sense, but more the kind of a song a man would sing while he is on the road on the way to receive his sweetheart. An interesting song, it has tremendous potential to make a man sing loudly, make him stand on his motorbike and make him look amazingly corny while he does all of the above. SRK did another “Deewana” song after a few years (Pardes, and this time in a car), and you can add that to the list too.

8. Woofer Tu Meri Meri, Mai Tera Amplifier (Imran Khan): A revolutionary song, it is hard to understand what the lyricist was thinking while structuring the words. Anyway, it is a must-play for the road-tripper who has suddenly realized a great, even devotional affection for his stereos and speakers, and feels an urgent need to tell these inanimate objects how much they mean to him.

9) Bhag Bhag DK Bose (Delhi Belly): This is for the poor road-tripper whose car is not running properly, maybe because of a faulty engine, maybe because of a naughty potato that decided to create some mischief in the exhaust pipe. The song will serve as a great inspiration from the master to his vehicle to “bhaag bhaag”, I mean, move faster despite all obstacles that might come in its way.

10) Dil Dhadakne Do (ZNMD): Enough jokes, time to show off our philosophical side. “Dil Dhadakne Do” from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara encapsulates almost everything the movie is about, a set of friends going on a trip, discovering freedom and themselves. A happy song, it could be part of your list.

Coming soon: Best road-trip songs (English). Till then, bhag bhag dk bose.
