Looking at the city’s incredible skyline, it’s Alpha World City rating and the remarkable cultural diversity, it’s difficult to imagine Kuala Lumpur’s humble beginnings as a shanty tin-mining town. Eating, shopping and the colourful nightlife are definitely reasons to visit Malaysia’s bustling metropolis of a capital city, but they are not the only things to do in Kuala Lumpur. Activities in Kuala Lumpur are varied and suited for people of all ages and cultures. Here’s a look at some of the most interesting Kuala Lumpur things to do.
1. Sign up for a cooking class
Learn to cook some authentic Malay food (although the odds of trying these back home are not too high unless you plan on bringing back a stash of local ingredients with you), meet interesting people, get a little dirty and have loads of fun. Most of these classes happen at local homes and come at affordable prices.
2. Relax with a Fish Spa
Soak yourself in a tub of water with these particular fish and let them nibble away at your body, eating away all the dead skin. So when you step out, you skin is all smooth and new and shiny. If you’re not really into the fish thing, there are loads of other spa experiences to be had in Kuala Lumpur where you’ll find these outfits around every corner.
3. Meet rescued Asian elephants
In the midst of a tropical rainforest hardly an hour and a half from KL is the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary. The sanctuary creates a natural environment to rehabilitate the elephants and nurtures them back to health before releasing them back into the wild. You will get an insight into the daily activities of the magnificent beasts from the wildlife experts who care for them.
4. Walk across the Petronas Towers
The twin Petronas Towers were the tallest in the world at some point. Climb up halfway and cross the bridge between the two, the view is quite amazing! It’s free but you need to reserve tickets from the Petronas Towers office (in the basement of Suria KLCC mall) early in the morning; they are gone pretty fast!
5. Go gambling at Genting Highlands
Genting is a hill station outside of the city with a world famous theme park that encompasses an amusement park and Malaysia’s only casino. There’s a golf course and shopping mall too. The park is divided into four indoor and outdoor zones – the Outdoor Theme Park, First World Indoor Theme Park, Water Park and Video Games Park. Besides a couple of thrilling rides, the indoor park is quite fancy with rides interspersing the food and shopping areas.
6. Take a ride on the Sky Train
There is a regular train and an express bullet train to the airport, but the best is the sky train that covers half the city. The sky train or monorail offers some amazing views of the city. It’s cheap, easily accessible and very consumer friendly.
7. Take a Canopy Walk
The Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) is a 600-hectare tropical rainforest filled with thousands of flora and fauna species. The Canopy Walkway is a 200-metre long sisal bridge suspended 30 metres above the ground. It can be a little daunting, but the view around and down below is well worth it!
8. Pilot an aircraft around the city
This is one of the newer, innovative options available. Pilot a Cessna (or similar) aircraft beside a trained professional pilot (of course!). You will be given a briefing on basic flying technique and then off you go…into the skies! Some of the best views of the city if you have the time to look out.
9. Go on a shopping spree
KL is a shopper’s paradise. Bukit Bintang is the largest retail therapy option available. Suria KLCC, next to the Petronas towers is another great option; a little expensive, perfect during sale season. For street shopping and rip-off’s of every possible designer label, head to Petaling Street in Chinatown. Shoes, bags, watches, DVD’s!
10. Lap up the fantastic Cuisine
Chinese, Malay and (South)Indian are the dominating cuisine here. But you’ll also find heavy influences of Thai and Burmese. Besides these, Western and Italian cuisines are also quite popular. From amazing street food to chic fine dining, Kuala Lumpur is heaven for foodies.
