Singapore has earned itself the reputation of being a tourist hot spot of sorts, and justifiably so. The city’s skyline is postcard perfect, with towering skyscrapers disappearing into the clouds. Whether it is the public transport or traffic management, everything works in clockwork fashion—a welcome surprise for most Indians. The metropolis offers a variety of sights and experiences for all types of travelers. History junkies would enjoy the city’s many museums, while nature lovers would love the Jurong Bird Park and Night Safari. The city abounds in good dining choices. Singaporeans take their shopping very seriously, and even the most hardcore shopper will be delighted by the shopping options. A burgeoning art scene and cultural hubs such as Chinatown complete the Singapore package. Singaporeans are crazy about their iced Milo, preferring it even over cola. Hot pants are the national attire, paired with killer heels of course. One dollar ice cream, eaten in bread, is a favourite street side snack. Ladies’ night at Clark Quay (Wednesday) and warehouse sales are dates to watch. The rains are brief yet vicious, beating down with all their might. Singaporeans habitually end their sentences with “lah” and the queues outside Louis Vuitton showrooms tell you how brand obsessed they are. If you ride the metro at peak time, you’ve probably seen Singapore at its manic best.
The official currency of Singapore is Singapore Dollar (SGD) 1 SGD = 43 INR approximately. (For latest rates, check www.xe.com)
Language should not be a problem to visitors to Singapore, as most locals are well versed with English. English signage is prominent across the city. Apart from English, Mandarin is widely spoken, as is Malay and Tamil. Interestingly, Singapore has evolved its own informal language of sorts, appropriately named "Singlish" Sentences end in "lah" (which is why Singapore is often jokingly referred to as La-La land). The ubiquitous "Okay" becomes "Can also". Even if you don' speak it, the sing-song tone of Singlish makes it most amusing to listen to!
