Whether you have been naughty or nice, no one can stop you from digging into a rum cake this Christmas. Doesn’t matter if you are Hindu or Muslim, on Christmas do as the Christians do. Here’s a list of the places that see the best Christmas celebrations in India.
Go to Goa
Goa is unarguably the best place in India to celebrate Christmas. The revelry assumes epic proportions at this time. The decorations are stunning, lights everywhere, waft of rum cakes floating around, sound of carols resounding in the air – Christmas is no less than a carnival here. And the parties. After the midnight mass, the parties begin and go on till the wee hours of the morning. There’s dancing on the streets, on the beaches, wine flows freely, and nobody wants to sleep.
A Quick Visit to Old Bandra in Mumbai
Old Bandra, predominantly Catholic, is where Christmas festivities are brightest. It is one place which retains the traditional spirit of Christmas. Hill Road is filled with X-Mas decorations and paraphernalia, and is the place where the best Christmas shopping happens. There’s a whiff of cakes at every corner of the street here, and ‘tis the best place to attend a midnight mass. Needless to say, it’s busy season for bakeries.
A Musical X-Mas in Shillong
It is no secret that best music comes from Shillong. The Shillong Chamber Choir enjoys has an international reputation. It not only won the reality show India’s Got Talent, but was also awarded gold in the 6th World Choir Games held in Shanghai in 2010. The city’s churches (and there are lots of them owing to the high Christian population), and even the streets are filled with brilliant music from local bands. Rum and brandy are popular here, and so is dancing. The festivities begin a month before Christmas. Memorize your carols so that you may sing along.
Cake Special in Kolkata
Almost everyone who visits Kolkata returns home with cake, a specialty of the city. Park Street is all lights and Christmas trees at this time. The midnight mass at St. Paul’s Cathedral is the most popular.
What you can do staying in your home city:
Attend Christmas Mass – That’s the easiest way to get a flavor of Christmas – apart from gorging on rum cakes. Go to the church nearest your house and partake of the festive spirit.
Cakes Everywhere –If you have a Christian friend, invite yourself to his/her house on Christmas. Every Christian family bakes/orders kilos of cake on Christmas, just like we have an overdose of mithai on Diwali.
Decorate your space with Christmas decorations
Buy some cute Christmas decorations flooding the markets these days, and get creative with them in your work space or at home. Bells, gift-wrapped boxes, candies, Santa dolls – the variety is too wide to be resisted.
Merry Christmas!
