Yet another step towards going global, the silicon city of India, Bangalore has enabled its railway station with high speed internet available over Wi-Fi. Providing seamless internet connectivity sounds like an exhaustive thing to do, owing to the large throngs of masses commuting in and out, making it a very busy station. Seems, South Western Railway officials will do anything for commuters’ comfort. It’s not only going to make it easy for passengers to access important railway information but also make life easier for the railway professionals. With the help of simple Wi-Fi technology, the railways would be able to help commuters with information like checking train schedules, PNR status and instant ticket bookings, which would otherwise end up in long queues against the enquiry desk. The tech savvy city is the first in India to provide such Wi-Fi facility to commuters on the railway station.

Now, the good part is that this facility is available free of cost for about 30 minutes on the mobile phones and other mobile devices of the passengers. Availing internet beyond 30 minutes would require the passenger to buy scratch cards which are also available at nominal prices across Wi-Fi desks at the station. Although the implementation is a success but the facility is taken up as a pilot project, and if things are smooth, it’s going to make a great success story for RailTel Corporation of India Ltd, which is involved in rolling out the distribution of internet bandwidth through WiFi. RailTel has also been assigned to provide Wi-Fi facilities at other A1 and A category stations.

Thane stations, Connaught Place in Delhi, and Dadar and CST in Mumbai are next in the line to get Wi-Fi services, well it’s going to be interesting to wait and see which station gets this upgrade next.
