Free internet will be accessible from 4,400 (approx) hotspots across Taiwan. These hotspots will be located at chief tourist hubs, transportation centers, cultural enterprises and government offices all over the country. The free WiFi runs on 512k bandwidth only, so you obviously cant download torrents using it. But it’s sufficient to view maps and online English translators which is like a blessing for tourists in the mainly Chinese-speaking country.
iTaiwan wireless network launched in 2011 by the The Taiwan government gave free internet access to the citizens of Taiwan. Locals could register for the service by giving their phone number. Now the service has been opened up to visitors from overseas, who can register for the same by showing their passports to staff at tourist offices in airports, train stations or Metro stations. Following which they will be given an account number, which will enable them to have access to free Wi-Fi (1Mbps) just like the locals. Check the official website here.
This makes Taiwan the only country in the world to offer free Wi-Fi to all its citizens and now to its foreign tourists as well. With this move, Taiwan adds another feather to its cap of quality travel services. Other countries too are keen on moving in the same direction. Before Sao Paolo in Brazil hosts the football World Cup in 2014, it is is taking up a tender to invest in a free Wi-Fi project. Also Thailand invested an additional US$30 million for its free Wi-Fi project. Kyoto, Japan has enhanced its free Wi-Fi offerings, following Taiwan’s move.
