An animated video has been released by the Pennsylvania based engineering Firm Ansys, simulating just what happens inside an airplane when someone sneeze sitting right in the middle of an airplane and to say that the results are slightly intimidating is quite an understatement.
According to their readings the particles can travel upto 50 ft inside a plane body dispersing in all directions around the cabin due to plane airflow, which is defined by one of the directors at Ansys as “spreading quite far”.
The whole idea of launching a video is to make sure that the public health officials along with the airlines themselves get all the information and understanding regarding the way in which certain diseases could spread and the need of some concrete measures as to prevent some serious airborne infections like influenza to spread through this.
The director at Ansys added that although the air inside the main cabin gets recycled every two minutes, the requirement of an improved air conditioning system is imperative to avoid the health hazards that could occur. While most of the improved technologies always carry a high price tag with them, Ansys claims that the transparency in their technology can help Airlines in improving their performance while sacrificing lesser costs for the same.
A disclaimer by health experts suggests that despite the apparent dispersion of germs, it is not commonplace neither easy to catch flu while flying, and the problem does not extends to the much feared Ebola Virus as it’s not an Airborne one.
So the next time you sneeze in an airplane? Do not forget to get up and shout “Excuse me” at the top of your voice as you may have affected all with the unintentional germs those your nasal track generously donated to the air around.
